Pelvic Pain Q & A
What causes pelvic pain?
Pelvic pain is pain that occurs in the lowest part of your pelvis and abdomen. In women, pelvic pain can be associated with nerve or muscle irritation of the pelvic floor or problems of the reproductive, digestive, or urinary systems. The pain might also be attributed to musculoskeletal sources.
There are several types of conditions that can cause pelvic pain. Pelvic pain related to the female reproductive system can be caused by a number of conditions, such as:
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Menstrual cramps
- Ovarian cysts and ovarian cancer
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Uterine fibroids
- Vulvodynia
- Urinary tract infection
In women of childbearing age, a leading cause of pelvic pain is endometriosis, which occurs when the tissue that lines the uterus grows in other places in the body, such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and other pelvic organs.
Other general causes of pelvic pain include:
- Colon cancer
- Appendicitis
- Constipation
- Crohn’s disease
- Diverticulitis
- Interstitial cystitis
- Irritable bowel syndrome
You might only notice pelvic pain at certain times, such as during sexual activity or when you urinate. Some pelvic pain can radiate to your buttocks, thighs, or lower back.
When should I see my gynecologist about my pelvic pain?
If you suddenly experience severe pelvic pain, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible.
If your pelvic pain is new or chronic, disrupts your daily life, or has worsened over time, visit the Jersey Women’s Care Center for appropriate treatment to get you feeling better.
What are the treatments for pelvic pain?
The right treatment for your pelvic pain depends on its cause and severity, the current state of your overall health, and your individual preferences and concerns. Treatments can include lifestyle changes, such as nutrition and exercise, and various medications, such as anti-inflammatories or hormonal contraceptives.
In some cases, surgery might be necessary. Modern gynecological surgeries are now more advanced, safe, and effective than ever before.
